Mounted Operations Unit (MOU) horses

The South Australian Police Mounted Operations Unit (MOU) horses are no longer based in Adelaide's CBD, but there is a staging post in the city to support their operations:

  • New location

The MOU horses are now based at Gepps Cross, north of Adelaide. The new facility includes indoor and outdoor stables, and the indoor stables are temperature controlled.

  • Staging post

A staging post was created in the CBD to support the MOU's operational duties. The staging post includes soundproof kennels for the horses and a sealed bin for waste management. The horses may be briefly heard walking to the site in the early morning if there is little traffic and other noise.

The MOU moved from the state heritage-listed Thebarton Barracks, which will be demolished to make way for a new Women's and Children's Hospital.

Most of MOU's duties in the CBD are for pre-planned activities and horses will be deployed from the New Gepps Cross site to respond to policing needs in the CBD.
